Brian was doing the door at the Be Bop club with unfailing regularity when I started going in the early 90’s. I didn’t see him for a number of years – he was a postie so was never up late and going to Jazz clubs, but I’ve always remembered him from those days as a enthusiastic supporter of jazz, smoker of evil smelling cigars and purveyor of kind words about my early fumbling attempts to play and perform
He died last week. He’d been in poor health after a stroke a few years back that forced his retirement. It had been good to see him back at the club occasionally in the last couple of years enjoying the music and still offering the odd whoop.
